Check out the Facebook Gestures audio below.

If you have been keeping up with the recent announcements from Facebook, then you are probably aware of the upcoming changes that could be rather embarassing to you. If you didn’t catch this, then hang on, because this is going to be interesting.

There is a soon to be released functionality that will automatically share what you do on sites and applications that you access with your Facebook account.

Here is how it works: You sign up to access a website with your Facebook account and leave all of the privacy settings at their defaults. Then you log onto the site and start viewing various articles. Now, that site is able to share what articles it is you are reading via your Facebook timeline. This is all done auto-magically.

Again, as a marketer, this is amazing. You get incredible social proof, by having everyone automatically post to their timeline that they read you article. It also does a great job at instantly promoting your content and encourages people to consume it.

However, as a Facebook user, this might just catch you off guard. Here is how it might go down wrong for you. Let’s say that it is your wife or husbands birthday and you decide to go online to find that perfect gift. You start searching via the sites you know and trust, via your handy-dandy Facebook login. Now, instantly everything you have checked out on their sites is showing up in your timeline.

Now your gift is not only not a surprise, but now you have to explain why you ended up choosing what you did when you checked out all these way nicer things.

But this isn’t too much to worry about. You can easily change these settings in all of the applications you have that are associated with Facebook. You just need to be aware that in the VERY near future they will be shared.

In my last article, we covered the changes that quietly occurred
to your privacy settings within LinkedIn. If you haven’t had a chance to read
that article, then the rest of this might not make that much sense to you. So,
you can check it out here.

As I promised, here are the details on how you can fix your
settings within LinkedIn so that you are no longer sharing this information.

Here we go:

STEP 1: Go to Settings

You will need to log in to your LinkedIn account. Once you
have done this, then go to the top right of the screen where you see your
username. Click on the downward arrow and choose SETTINGS, like in the picture
below.

This will take you to the settings portion of your account,
where you can make the changes

STEP 2: DATA SHARING WITH 3RD PARTIES

To change this setting, click on “Groups, Companies &
Applications” (see RED arrow below). You will then be able to select “Turn
on/off data sharing with 3rd party applications” (in the RED box below).

This will bring up the dialog box below. Just un-check the ‘Yes,
share my data with third party applications” and then click on “Save changes”.

Congratulations, you now have blocked LinkedIn from sharing
your information with 3rd parties.

STEP 3: MANAGE SOCIAL ADVERTISING

To change this setting, click on “Account” (see RED arrow
below). You will then be able to select “Manage Social Advertising” (in the RED
box below).

This will bring up the dialog box below. Just uncheck the
box “Linkedin may use my name, photo in social advertising”.

Congratulations, you have now blocked LinkedIn from making
you an unpaid endorser.

STEP 4: PARTNER INMAIL

To change this setting, click on “Email Preferences” (see
RED arrow below). You will then be able to select “Turn on/off partner InMail”
(in the RED box below).

This will bring up the dialog box below. Just uncheck the boxes
”Linkedin’s marketing partners may send you information and promotional
messages” and “Linkedin’s hiring campaign partners may sen you informational
and promotional messages”. (NOTE: If you are job hunting, you may want to leave
that second box checked)

Congratulations, you have now blocked LinkedIn from becoming
a portal for companies to barrage your inbox with promotional mailings.

THAT’S IT

Well, there you go. That is all you need to do to fix the
privacy problems within Linked. While you are there, come check me out. I’m at PatronusMarketing.com/LinkedIn

If you are one of the more than 100 million users of LinkedIn, then you already know that it is a great place to share information with other professionals. But, did you know that you might be sharing more than you really wanted to?

Recently, there have been some changes made to the LinkedIn system that are a little reminiscent of the Facebook default privacy settings changes of the recent past. In fact, these changes on LinkedIn occurred back in June. But don’t be surprised if you didn’t catch the change, since it was quietly announced on 2 simple blog posts. This is the equivalent of a whisper on such a massive platform.

Although these privacy changes do make me think of the Facebook changes, in reality they are much different. The changes in LinkedIn are not tied to what another person on LinkedIn can see, as much as it relaxes what access 3rd party companies have to you and your information.

If you didn’t catch the June announcement, then you are likely compromised in these three areas:

- Data Sharing with 3rd Party Applications ( Who has the ability to have access to you information)

- Manage Social Advertising (Linking you to advertisements your network sees)

- Partner InMail (Who can email you)

DATA SHARING WITH 3rdPARTY APPLICATIONS

Have you ever installed an application onto LinkedIn or have granted one access while utilizing the platform? Well, under the new settings, you are providing them with access to all of your data on. The more applications you use or install, the more your data is shared.

MANAGE SOCIAL ADVERTISING

Did you know that you are the latest Spokesman or Spokeswoman for Xerox or perhaps Dell? Well, you might be if you have not changed this setting in your profile.

Have you ever recommended someone or a service on LinkedIn. Have you ever followed a company? If you have done any of those things or a taken a number of other actions, then your name and photo can be used in LinkedIn advertisements which are shown to people in YOUR NETWORK.

Let me paint a mental picture for you. Imagine that I have a great idea for a joint venture with a local urologist. I find the doctor on LinkedIn and connect him and follow his practice, so that I can start a conversation about my idea .

Meanwhile, you have decided to connect with me (my LinkedIn profile) and are starting to see ads where I am recommending impotence treatments and bladder control products. You are starting to get a picture of me that while it might be safe to leave me alone with your wife, you might not want to let me sit on your couch.

In this imaginary scenarios, instead of thinking about how I can help your business grow, you are now thinking about me in terms completely unrelated to the services I provide.

PARTNER INMAIL

Have you noticed that you are starting to get more email from promotional campaigns tied to LinkedIn? What is happening is that marketing partners to the site are sending out emails to you based on non-personal information. This is information such as what your current position title is, what industry you currently work in and where you are located.

Your actual email address is not shared with these marketing partners, but as long as they pay, they can send you emails through the InMail system.

You can easily opt out of this and I will walk you through how to do so for this and the other 2 problems I just covered in my next article tomorrow. Come over to Facebook to get notified when it gets published.
